Classics Club Spin #38

Spiders Web

I have no idea what’s going on with these spins.  But I keep doing them and if I look back, I think I’ve finished books that I’ve spun, but not necessarily on time.  In any case, I’m making my way through my Classics Club list and that’s the point, right?

So ….. time for another spin:

The Rules for the Classics Club Spin #38 are:
  1. Go to your blog.
  2. Pick twenty books that you’ve got left to read from your Classics Club list.
  3. Post that list, numbered 1 – 20, on your blog by Sunday.
  4. Sunday morning, the Classics Club will announce a number from 1 – 20.  Go to the list of twenty books you posted and select the book that corresponds to the number they announce.
  5. The challenge is to read the book by September 22, 2024

Book Stack

I used the random list organizer here to choose the 20 books from my master list. Here is my spin list:

  1. Shirley (1849) – Charlotte Brontë
  2. Troilus & Criseyde (1382-86) – Geoffrey Chaucer
  3. Wives and Daughters (1864/66) – Elizabeth Gaskell
  4. Richard III (1592) – William Shakespeare
  5. Lives (75) – Plutarch
  6. The Journey Through Wales (1191) – Gerald of Wales
  7. Cur Deus Homo (1094-1096) – Anselm of Canterbury
  8. The Voyage of Argo (3rd century) – Apollonius of Rhodes
  9. Fairy Tales (1831) – Hans Christian Andersen
  10. Tartuffe (1669) – Molière
  11. Moll Flanders (1722) – Daniel Defoe
  12. The History of the Kings of Britain (1136) – Geoffrey Monmouth
  13. Mary Barton (1848) – Elizabeth Gaskell
  14. Reveries of a Solitary Walker (1782) – Jean Jacques Rousseau
  15. Heptaméron (1558) – Marguerite of Navarre
  16. The Good Soldier Svejk (1923) – Jaroslav Hasek
  17. Meditations (170-180) – Marcus Aurelius
  18. The Romance of Tristan (c. 12th century) – Beroul
  19. The Republic (380 B.C.) – Plato
  20. The Stranger (1942) – Albert Camus

I was hoping for #13 because I’m reading it now, ha ha!

As with previous Spins, instead of producing a new post, I’m going to simply announce the winner below and, to make it easier to complete at least one book, I’m going to choose a book from my Guardians Listmy Shakespeare Projectand my Children’s Classics Project, with no deadline date, just a dedication to read.

And the winning number was 17 !  Meditations, here I come.  For some reason, it seems familiar.  I think I’ve spun it before.  Yikes!  See my other options below:

  1. You couldn’t have gotten a better number imo! I am looking forward to the review of one of my most cherished books.

    • So lovely to hear from you, Silvia. I hope you and your family are well! I’m so glad to hear that this book means so much to you. Your comment gives me inspiration to start. I’ve been starting to write more reviews so I hope to have one up for this one. Take Care!

      • I am glad to see that you are also here, reading and sharing more reviews. I admire your dedication to the classics. I hope you finish the other books for the other categories as well.

    • Yay! My comment on your blog went through. I’ve been having a hard time commenting but I suspect the issue is at my end.

  2. I agree, The Meditations is a good one! I’ve read it a couple of times. And it’s short, and pretty easy-reading for a philosophy book, ha ha…

It would be fun to see what you thought.

  3. Second attempt to comment on this post. We’ll see!

The Meditations is a good one! And it’s pretty short & easy reading for a philosophy book, ha ha… Hope you enjoy it.

    • That’s so weird! I rarely get spam and I just received a bunch and then your responses were there too. I haven’t had a problem with that before so hopefully it’s an anomaly. I’m reading both The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment in August (BK will go to November) so I hope I have time for this one!

      • I’m glad you were able to rescue it! I don’t know why WordPress now thinks my comments are spam, but they haven’t been showing up on various sites–not just yours.

  4. It has been a long time since I visited your blog. But since I’ve decided to read more CLASSICS in the next coming months I had a look at your “Classics” lists (#1 and #2). Ten years ago there were many enthusiastic bloggers (…remember Beyond the Stars blog?) …all reading the classics. These days I can find just a few people who are actively reading the classics. I hope to post some reviews about what I’m reading…and of course the major challenge “City of God”. There should be a coffee mug with the inscription: I read “City of God” ! Ha! Hope to visit your blog more often in 2024/2025 and keep the “classics” flame burning!

    • It’s so nice to see you, Nancy!! It’s been only occasionally that I’ve been posting here, so I’ve been lax looking for comments. I hope to post more in the new year but we’ll see. At least I’m reading!

I’ve seen you very active on Goodreads and that you’re tackling City of God. I’m very glad to hear that you’re “back to the classics”. You just can’t beat them and reading with others makes it even more rewarding.

I hope you have lots of good coffee and books in the future!

Thanks for visiting. I'd love to hear from you and have you join in the discussion!
